  • Persistent facial redness
  • Frequent flushing

Real Patient Results

Over the past 20 years, Dr Peter Kim has treated many patients with challenging rosacea skin problems.

Below are examples of actual patients treated at Cosmetic Laser Sydney.

Before and after laser treatment for rosacea and melasma showing reduced facial redness, visible blood vessels, and pigmentation.
This patient presented with both dense melasma and rosacea. Although these conditions can appear together, they require different treatment approaches and different laser technologies. Rosacea is caused by abnormal blood vessels and inflammation, whereas melasma is a pigment disorder. For this reason, vascular lasers are used to treat rosacea and redness, while pigment-targeting lasers are used to treat melasma. This case demonstrates that rosacea can be successfully treated with laser therapy and, when combined with appropriate pigment laser treatments, melasma can also be addressed during the same treatment program. Careful assessment is important, as treating melasma and rosacea requires balancing two different conditions while minimising the risk of irritation or worsening pigmentation. The photographs below show improvement in both facial redness from rosacea and pigmentation from melasma following a combined laser treatment approach.

Before and after laser treatment for rosacea and melasma showing reduced facial redness, visible blood vessels, and pigmentation.

Before and after six laser treatment sessions for rosacea and facial pigmentation in Asian skin, showing reduced redness, pimples, and pigmentation.
This patient demonstrates a classic presentation of rosacea commonly seen in Asian skin, with persistent facial redness, inflammatory papules (pimples) on the cheeks, and associated pigmentation. Both the rosacea and pigmentation were treated using a combination of laser therapies tailored to address the different components of the condition. Rosacea-related redness and inflammation were treated with vascular laser treatment, while pigment-targeting lasers were used to address the associated pigmentation. The photographs show the results after six treatment sessions, with significant improvement in facial redness, pimples, and pigmentation, resulting in a clearer and more even skin tone.
Before and after laser treatment for freckles, rosacea, and broken facial capillaries, showing clearer skin, reduced redness, and improved skin tone.
This patient presented with widespread facial freckles and mild rosacea affecting the cheeks, accompanied by prominent broken capillaries (visible facial blood vessels). As rosacea and pigmentation require different treatment approaches, a combination of laser therapies was used. The broken capillaries and rosacea-related redness were treated using vascular laser treatment, while the freckles were treated with pigment-targeting laser therapy and laser skin brightening techniques. The combination approach allowed both the vascular and pigmented components of the patient’s skin concerns to be addressed, resulting in a clearer complexion, reduced redness, and a more even skin tone.
"Before and after eight laser treatment sessions for rosacea and melasma, showing reduced facial redness and pigmentation."
This patient presented with widespread facial redness caused by rosacea, together with pigmentation associated with melasma. As rosacea and melasma are different conditions requiring different treatment approaches, a combination of vascular and pigment-targeting laser therapies was used. The rosacea-related redness was treated with vascular laser treatment, while the melasma was managed using specialised pigment laser techniques. The photographs show the results after eight treatment sessions, with significant improvement in both facial redness and pigmentation, resulting in a more even and balanced complexion.
"Before and after laser treatment for rosacea and facial freckles, showing reduced cheek redness and improved skin pigmentation."
This patient presented with generalized redness of the cheeks due to rosacea, together with facial freckles. Because rosacea and freckles require different treatment approaches, a combination of laser therapies was used. The rosacea-related redness was treated with vascular laser treatment, while the freckles were treated using pigment-targeting laser therapy. The photographs demonstrate improvement in both conditions, with reduced facial redness, fewer visible freckles, and a more even skin tone.
Before and after eight laser treatment sessions for rosacea and generalized facial pigmentation in Asian skin, showing reduced redness and a more even complexion.
Rosacea and generalized facial pigmentation often coexist in Asian skin and are a common presentation seen in our clinic. Because these conditions have different underlying causes, they require different treatment approaches. We use vascular laser treatment to target the redness and visible blood vessels associated with rosacea, while pigment lasers and laser skin brightening techniques are used to address the pigmentation. By combining these treatments, both the vascular and pigment components can be treated simultaneously as part of a comprehensive treatment program. The photographs shown demonstrate the results achieved after eight treatment sessions, with significant improvement in facial redness, pigmentation, and overall skin tone.
"Before and after laser treatment for rosacea and diffuse melasma in Asian skin, showing reduced facial redness and pigmentation."
We enjoy treating challenging cases where rosacea and diffuse melasma occur together in Asian skin. These conditions can be particularly difficult to manage because the redness from rosacea and the pigmentation from melasma require different treatment approaches, and each condition can potentially aggravate the other. Over many years of experience, we have developed treatment protocols that combine vascular laser therapy for rosacea with specialised pigment laser and laser skin brightening techniques for melasma. This allows us to address both conditions safely and effectively while minimising the risk of irritation and worsening pigmentation. The results shown demonstrate that even complex cases involving both rosacea and diffuse melasma can often be treated successfully with a carefully planned, multi-session treatment program.

Types Of Birthmarks We Commonly Treat

Nevus of Ota

Nevus of Ota is a congenital birthmark caused by pigment cells located deep within the skin.

It often appears as blue-grey or brown pigmentation involving the face and around the eye.

Because the pigment is located deep within the dermis, treatment usually requires multiple laser sessions.

Café-au-Lait Patches

Café-au-lait patches are light brown birthmarks that often respond better to treatment because the pigment is located more superficially within the skin.

Several treatment sessions are usually required.

ABNOM (Hori’s Naevus)

ABNOM is a common pigmentation disorder seen particularly in Asian patients.

Although not present at birth, it behaves similarly to Nevus of Ota and often requires multiple treatment sessions.

Congenital Melanocytic Naevi

These pigmented birthmarks are present at birth and vary considerably in size and depth.

Laser treatment may help lighten the pigmentation and improve cosmetic appearance, particularly when surgical removal is not practical.

Why Experience Matters

Birthmark treatment is highly operator-dependent.

Successful treatment requires:

• Accurate diagnosis

• Understanding the depth of pigmentation

• Appropriate laser selection

• Correct treatment settings

• Experience managing pigmentation complications

Different birthmarks respond very differently to treatment.

Some lesions may improve after only a few treatments, while others require long-term staged treatment over many months.

Dr Peter Kim has over 20 years of experience treating both superficial and deep pigmentation disorders.

Birthmark Treatment In Asian & Ethnic Skin

Asian and ethnic skin types often contain higher levels of melanin and may be more prone to pigmentation changes following laser treatment.

Many of the birthmarks we treat, including Nevus of Ota and ABNOM, are particularly common in Asian patients.

Dr Peter Kim has extensive experience treating Asian and ethnic skin and carefully adjusts treatment settings according to skin type and lesion characteristics.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments depends on:

• The type of birthmark

• The depth of pigmentation

• The size of the lesion

• Skin type

• Individual response to treatment

As a general guide:

• Café-au-lait patches often require 3–8 sessions

• ABNOM commonly requires 6–10 sessions

• Nevus of Ota may require 10–20 or more sessions

• Congenital melanocytic naevi often require staged treatment

A personalised treatment plan will be discussed during consultation.

What Is Recovery Like?

Most patients experience:

• Redness

• Swelling

• Temporary bruising

• Temporary darkening of pigment

Recovery usually takes approximately one week following each treatment.

Healing time varies depending on the type of birthmark and the treatment intensity required.

Important Information

Not all birthmarks can be completely removed.

The goal of treatment is often to:

• Lighten pigmentation

• Improve cosmetic appearance

• Reduce visibility

• Make lesions easier to conceal

Many patients achieve significant improvement, but complete clearance cannot always be guaranteed.

Our focus is on achieving the greatest possible improvement while maintaining patient safety and realistic expectations.

Potential Risks And Complications

Laser treatment is generally very safe when performed by an experienced doctor.

Potential risks include:

• Temporary redness

• Bruising

• Hyperpigmentation

• Hypopigmentation

• Delayed healing

• Scarring (rare)

These risks vary according to the lesion type and treatment depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can all birthmarks be removed?

No.

Some birthmarks can be significantly improved, while others can only be partially lightened.

The expected outcome depends on the type and depth of the birthmark.

Is treatment painful?

Most patients tolerate treatment well. Topical anaesthetic or local anaesthetic may be used when appropriate.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients experience approximately one week of redness, swelling or bruising following treatment.

Are results permanent?

Improvement is usually long-lasting once pigment is successfully removed, although some birthmarks may require additional treatment over time.
