What Is Xanthelasma?
Xanthelasma are yellow cholesterol deposits that develop within the skin around the eyelids.
They most commonly occur:
• On the upper eyelids
• On the lower eyelids
• Around the inner corners of the eyes
Although harmless, they can become more noticeable with time and many patients choose treatment for cosmetic reasons.
Is Xanthelasma Caused By High Cholesterol?
Not necessarily.
Although xanthelasma consists of cholesterol deposits within the skin, many patients have completely normal cholesterol levels.
Some patients may have elevated cholesterol or a family history of cholesterol disorders, while others have no identifiable cholesterol abnormality.
For this reason, xanthelasma is often considered to have a significant genetic component.
Why Experience Matters Around The Eyes
The eyelid is one of the most delicate areas of the face.
Successful treatment requires:
• Precise laser control
• Careful assessment of lesion depth
• Protection of surrounding tissue
• Experience with eyelid anatomy
Dr Peter Kim has over 20 years of experience performing cosmetic laser procedures around the eyes and eyelids.
This experience helps maximise cosmetic outcomes while minimising the risk of complications.
How Is Xanthelasma Removed?
Step 1 – Assessment
The xanthelasma is carefully examined and treatment suitability confirmed.
Step 2 – Local Anaesthetic
A small amount of local anaesthetic is used to maximise comfort.
Step 3 – CO₂ Laser Treatment
The xanthelasma is precisely removed using advanced CO₂ laser technology.
Step 4 – Aftercare
An antibiotic ointment is applied and aftercare instructions are provided.
Step 5 – Review
Patients are usually reviewed approximately 6 weeks after treatment.
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
Most patients achieve excellent results after a single treatment.
Occasionally, very large or deeper lesions may require a second treatment.
This is discussed during consultation.
Recovery And Downtime
Most patients experience:
• Mild swelling
• Mild redness
• Formation of a small scab
The scab usually separates within 7–10 days.
Redness gradually fades over the following weeks.
Most patients return to normal daily activities the next day.
Will The Xanthelasma Return?
The treated xanthelasma usually does not return in the same location. Chance of recurrence is around 5-10%,
However, because xanthelasma is influenced by genetics and cholesterol metabolism, new lesions can occasionally develop elsewhere over time.
Most patients enjoy long-lasting cosmetic improvement.
Potential Risks And Complications
Laser xanthelasma removal is generally very safe when performed by an experienced doctor.
Potential risks include:
• Temporary redness
• Delayed healing
• Infection (rare)
• Scarring (uncommon)
• Recurrence
These risks vary according to the size and location of the lesion and are discussed during consultation.
